15th Annual Donna (Half) Marathon-2022

Ya! The race community is Back!

Having so many races cancelled because of breaking my ankle, trying so hard to get back to the full marathon distance while also dealing with huge life changes of taking care of my ailing father, moving cities, becoming a first time home owner alone, breaking my other foot, losing my father and taking care of the affairs, then shortly after losing my pup of 15years, and starting over with a brand new puppy....needless to say it has been a very difficult  but tremendously exciting time in my life the past few years!! Running has just taken a back burner with all that has gone on. Thus, I once again downgraded to the half marathon.

The good news? My feet and ankle are great. It's a matter of my fitness catching back up! 2022 is gonna be my year! I have resigned up for the remaining 9 states for me to finish a half marathon in each of the 50 states! And it all starts with DONNA.

A knee flare-up from overuse kept me sidelined the month prior to race day which had me full of nerves on race day, but thankfully i was surrounded my familiar faces!

The unpredictable February Florida beach weather decised to play a game of a NorEaster. High winds and rain were in the forecast. I kinda was still okay with that though...at least its not hot!! ...until my umbrella at the start blew away! Lol

But lets back up a little. Expo was held downtown and a 15k was also available this year downtown. The expo was smaller than normal, other pre race fesrivities were still cancelled due to covid and the start/finish village was also scaled down. Racing was back but it was going to take time for it to get back to where it was befire.

This year had a New Race Start/Finish at SeaWalk Pavillion in Jacksonville Beach....my old hometown the previous decade. I got into my truck to drive the 40minute drive and the Dont Stop Believing song was on!

It felt good to be back at the beach. Parking was anywhere you could find a spot. I had no issue being an hour and half early. Weather wasn't the best to hang out at start and thankfully my friend was staying at the hotel right there so we stayed warm until last minute.

Lineup seemed a little unorganized and pretty much a free for all, but I just went with the "it is what it is" attitude....from my knee, to the weather...to even everything that I have been thru the past few years...nothings gonna stop me. I look over and someone is passing a bottle of Fireball😲🤔...it is what it is!🤣

The half marathon course ran the 2nd half of the old full marathon course. Which felt very weird to me, as I have still not made it back to the 26mile distance.

Spectators were still out in the rain cheering us on. I even hit a mimosa stand around m10

Surprisingly my knee held up great for the race. Last couple miles were difficult but mainly from being not in my best shape. The rain even held off except a little bout around this time as well.

The Galloway pacers were out in full force as always and I just made sure the 3hour mark didn't pass me. There are so many memories on this course. I tried to just replay the 15years of running this course in my head. I even had a guy yelling out motivating me as I was grunting every walk break. But I did it! I finished with staying consistent with my run/walk the entire course.

Cora and hot soup was at the Finishers Village and I got a much needed stretch. I also got an invite into the VIP tent with my friend  where we had mimosas and Taco Lu tacos! We stayed and cheered on the final runners. To be able to stand there and tell so many runners "congratulations you did it!" was a whole other level feeling for me! I had made so much progress in my beginning years of running and then knocked all the way down having to start completely over, but just still not giving up I was needing those words too. I know what it feels like to work hard and make it and then also work hard and still not be there. Both deserve that congratulations. Both STILL DID IT!

14th Annual DONNA Half Marathon Feb 2021

Oh 2020...what a year! The year the world shut down and forced us to separate. The Donna Marathon crew made early decisions that the 2021 race would need to be virtual, regardless of what the Covid19 status was several months away, because there are just too many participants that are survivors at risk. The mission must go on, though, so they appropriately held virtual events and the theme was Everywhere, Together. Packets would be mailed or picked up at the Donna office. No Expo. No VIP parities. No race. You run when and where you could and submit your information. Fundraise as normal. That was that.

On top of the struggles of Covid, I was dealing with my own battles. March 2020, Covid shut down visitation to nursing homes with no warning. Dad was suddenly left alone. I never got to give him a last hug and explanation. His health declined so rapidly from them. I tried the window visit with the phone but it was just horrible, not being able to see or hear well, and not even strong enough to hold the phone. It was so heartbreaking. But he held on. I have a feeling he was holding on for this lockdown to end. But I finally received the phone call that it was happening. Thank God they finally let me in. I got to be by his side for 4 days until he finally was at peace. Sept to November was a whirlwind dealing with what one goes through managing the estate. We took him 'home' to Minnesota in November and had the most magical ceremony at his hunting stand.

December quickly approached and I was looking at the final days of training for Donna which was just not going so hot. Back in August I had actually broken my 'other' foot  (remember I had broken my ankle just a couple years prior) -a jones fracture at the 5th metatarsal by just simply twisting and falling on a lip/raised crack in a driveway. I was only in a cast for a couple months, but it was enough to make the running and walking pause and then having to take it easy when i did start to incorporate running again. I already knew I didnt want to tackle the full marathon virtually, but this definitely sealed the deal that Id be lucky if Id even complete the half marathon without foot issues. Once again my marathon 'comeback' was postponed. Race day mindset was just do what I could do.

Then the end of January came and my pup of 15 years health took a sudden turn with heart failure. The next couple of weeks through race day were a blur, constantly babying, holding and loving on my pup. We had little sleep and lots of hallucinating for both of us.

Constance and I decided we still wanted to run the Donna race course to make it feel as close to a race day as possible, despite us being virtual. We Started and Finished at my Donna brick, "she believed she could, so she did." I brought my pup, Molly with me who slept soundly in the truck as we ran. It was an overcast cool and windy day in the 50s. I thought it would be perfect running weather for me, but within the first mile I knew my body was in no mood to run. I just couldnt breathe. We took it super easy and did a run/walk of 30/1:15. But I just could not catch my breathe the entire time. (my monitor later agreed. I ran 92% at maximum heart rate effort)

We headed north thru Neptune and Atlantic Beaches and actually saw some other runners, some Donna yard decorations, and even Donna and Tim themselves! All of that really helped make it feel somewhat of an actual race day! The last 5miles or so miles my body was just shot. I ended up telling Constance at the last couple miles to just go on without me, as I know she was ready to get it over with. I really thought with everything that was going on in my life, the motivation from all the emotions would just come out of me and get me to run. But i was just already too drained. Mentally, emotionally, physically. I honestly dont even remember most the day. I was living in a fog.

We Finished, exhausted, but we finished. I got my pup out of the truck and all of it didnt matter anymore. The results werent important. We completed it. We still did it. We didnt let Covid or life get in the way. We got out there and continued the fight to finish breast cancer! We had our own finish line celebration at my brick, got a pedicure, and made a fabulous dinner.

13th Annual-DONNA (Half) Marathon 2020

13th Annual DONNA (Half) Marathon

What better way to make a comeback from ankle surgery, than being recognized as a Top Fundraiser for DONNA (Half) Marathon weekend!!....What does that mean, you ask?...VIP All the Way Baby!!

-Complimentary 3nt weekend at the Oceanfront Seahorse Motel literally WITHIN race village/start/finish

-Invite to the VIP social event on Friday

-Invite to the VIP Ruth Chris After Party on the Finish Line

Yes Please!

OVERALL

I feel very blessed that I received this upgraded experience in not only my comeback year since ankle surgery, but also because it seemed like it was an appropriate close to a chapter. Not only has running been very difficult since surgery and I am literally finding myself back at Day 1 of becoming a runner, but all my time and energy has been put into caring for my father whos health is declining and making a transitional move into his house. During this very emotional and physically difficult time, I also learned that my employer will no longer be providing the grants in such a way that they have in the past. It is devastating news to learn, but I am so appreciative of how the partnership has provided so much over this past 13 years. Everything just all seemed to be a chapter that was closing and this upgraded VIP experience made it a time to remanence and celebrate all that I/We have done.

The run itself was extremely difficult for me but I was thankful for my friend's support who met me at multiple locations along the course!

EXPO

Since all races moved to the Beaches this year, the Expo was moved closer at the Morocco Shrine. Unfortunately with new things, come kinks. I ended up waiting in what was the longest line of the 14 years. I thought shopping first while the line went down would help, but the line never went down. Alas, I still got to see friends, win some goodies with some vendors, and buy some motivational running gear.

HOTEL

The Seahorse Motel is an iconic motel in the heart of the Atlantic Beaches, also right smack at the race start/finish line. The oceanfront room with balcony was a perfect set up to kick back and relax; in room and on the sand. Oh and as well at their tiki bar! Being a full moon weekend with perfect Florida winter cold but not too cold weather made the overall experience top notch!

FRI VIP SOCIAL

Friday night we met up with other top fundraisers, sponsors, race organizers, and charity recipients. Held at the Sawgrass Marriott, this event has always been my favorite, with snacks and drinks located on beautiful property. This year we had speeches given from charity recipients and it really helps to keep things into perspective on why we continue to do what we do.

SATURDAY

Saturday we spent the day lounging on the balcony and beach. Even happened to have a Girl Scout bring us some after race cookies! We had dinner at few of the local spots in which I had won certificates for!

SUNDAY-RACE DAY

I woke up extremely nervous. Even watching the sunrise from the room didnt seem to calm me. My training only took me to 8miles and the last 13 miles I had done was in Alaska 6 months prior! I knew I could make the distance, I just didnt know how bad it would feel. I didnt want to injury myself, but I didnt want to not be able to complete. Top that all off with, I wanted my comeback year to be of a finish time of where I was before ankle surgery. (yea I know, looking back I realize pretty much impossible)

Nothing felt right the entire run. Every step felt like it took so much effort. The weather started off nice and cool, but within a few miles I was already melting. Sweat would not stay out of my eyes, making me constantly have to wipe, which took away from focus on my foot placement, and i had still not overcome placement fears. The tracking app for the race wasnt working, so I had to constantly check in with my friend who was meeting me along the course to motivate me and in case something happened. I was excited it was a new course for me this year, but everything just felt off. Even the cheering spectators that I love so much were not helping. I was too much in my head, focusing too much on every step, and how hard it just seemed. I missed the times were running was effortless and fast (at least for a few miles). Disappointed in myself by M10 I just gave in to not reaching my average half marathon time/goal and started partying with the spectators who line the course with concessions (ahem, mimosa anyone?!) I changed my mind instantly and reminded myself of how far I have actually come this past year.....I was in a wheelchair this exact time last year!!! And yes it may be hard today, but I am still doing it, I never gave up, and one day I will be back to where I was.

VIP AFTER PARTY

As soon as I stopped running, my ankle tightened up. Sharp pains started and we knew we had to ice right away. Thank God for the Ruth Chris VIP tent! We grabbed our steak, shrimp and sweet potatoes and endless mimosas and iced the ankle, watching the rest of the runners trickle in.

Naps were taken and then we had a Second VIP After Party at our fearless leader Donna's house! Tacos were had and hammock swings taken! It was a beautiful night under the full moon in the back yard!

Back at the hotel, I continued celebrating at the Lemon Bar with my out of state runner friend!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall it was an awesome weekend and just what I needed for a comeback! A chapter may be closed for me in the top fundraiser world. A chapter may even be closed on running full marathons again; or even half. Who knows. All I can do is take it day by day, focus on me and my familys health, and see where the world takes me. Either way, that ankle never stopped me! Oh, and my time wasnt all that bad ;)

Alaska Running Cruise-July 21, 2019

Alaskan Running Cruise, Juneau Alaska, State 41-II'MMMMMM BAAAAAACK!

BACKGROUND
A couple of years ago I stumbled across a Facebook posting for the Great Alaskan Running Cruise....Whaaaat?? What is this? Of course I had to do it! It was perfect. Dad was just saying Alaska was one of the 2 states left that he never got to visit. I convinced him to sign up right away!

Fast forward several months later and dads health is declining and we have to withdrawl the registration.

Fast forward several months even later and I realize the following years cruise corresponds with what would be my 100th half marathon! So I convince my friends to sign up right away! Shortly after, I break my ankle requiring surgery, lots of metal, and doctors telling me they dont know if or how I will run again.

I keep the registration.

Obviously its no longer going to be my 100th half marathon celebration, but how could I let my friends go without me? Doing the calculations, sail date would put me 8months out from the year long recovery. Perfect! I have a goal! Run a half marathon 8 months post trimalleolar fracture surgery. This will be my first half marathon back celebration! And if worst comes to worst, it would just be a cruise with my friends! I can walk what I can.

So if you have been following along, we all know how awesome physical therapy and recovery has gone. There were slow downs and pains along the way that left me run/walking only minimal. I tried to focus on just doing the distance, even if it was just walking. Its amazing how not just my ankle, but my entire foot, calf and legs forgot what the long distant felt like! I was literally starting my running career all over again! Which made it even more of a mental challenge.

I ended up only making it to 10miles in training before we took off for our cruise. This left me a little discouraged, but I could only do what I could do. The course was set to be a lap course, so if worst comes to worst, I could call it early.

ABOUT
The cruise was a 7 night Southern track cruise, starting in Anchorage and ending in Vancouver, with runs planned in Anchorage, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. Juneau would be the half marathon  and the other were short 5k-10k fun runs. The only official timing was for the half marathon. We were on Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas. It was a normal cruise, but the Running Cruise was a group of a couple hundred runners and walkers on a regular cruise ship with other nonrunners. Your guest can be a runner or not and still be invited to all the activities and meals.

ANCHORAGE
We flew into Anchorage a few days early, one, so we didnt miss the cruise if something happened, and two, because I wanted to check out the city. We had a perfect Airbnb on the water with an awesome patio. In July the sun barely sets for a couple hours and doesnt really get real dark. The time difference and jet lag coming from East Coast plus the lightness made it a little difficult to adjust the first couple of days.

The Anchorage 5k ran on the Coastal Trail right in from of our Airbnb. This is a known area for moose sightings, but unfortunately it was quite warm and still too sunny out for them to be around when we ran. We met at Skinny Raven, the local running store for packet pick up, shopping with discounts, and some mingling. After the run, we had pizza and beer on the rooftop!

I

Anchorage is a cute little city but is also very accessible to nearby hikes if you want an escape in nature. Renting a car is suggested if you want to explore on your own, but there also are tour groups that will take you on a bus by set itinerary. In town we went to the Aurora Borealis viewing (Northern Lights commentary as you can not see them in the Summer). We drove out to Thunderbird Falls, Chugach State Park, and then down to Byron Glacier. Although the first two were good, I was hoping to see wildlife and we did not. (we had just missed a bear sighting though at the entry). Byron Glacier on the other hand was definitely worth the drive and back! Short trail with magical experience on the snow/ice! And YES! I stepped on the ice for the first time since breaking my ankle on ice! (okay, maybe just one foot!)

SEWARD
We took the train to Seward to catch the ship, and this was probably one of the highlights of the entire trip! The country side is absolutely gorgeous...lots of greenery, waterfalls, and wildlife! If you are indecisive on the cheap seats or upgrading, just go with the cheap ones! Plenty of space, and you still have dome carts you can help yourself to at any time there is a seat open (which was a lot) AND you can still add on dining if you decide you want a real meal. Or theres a snack bar available (with cocktails). Commentary was given the entire way so you learned what you were looking at as well. I highly enjoyed every moment of it.

As soon as the train arrived, I took a boat out to Kenai Fjords National Park before boarding the cruise ship, as there was plenty of time before dinner and departure. The water was surprisingly aqua in color. I got to see my first puffins and penguins. There were tons of other birds, seals, and they searched long and hard, but finally got some whales at the end!

Walking the boardwalk of Seward is very quaint. Got to have lunch and do some shopping!

DAY AT SEA-HUBBARD GLACIER
This was definitely better than I thought it was going to be! Note, the ship is far, far away, but the glacier is massive. They sell tickets to go on a small boat up close and personal, but it was HUNDREDS of dollars. I felt fine enough from the cruise ship. The ship constantly turns in a circle so everyone gets a view from every angle. You can also stay in your cabin if you like and view it from the tv! The sound of the calving was just amazing. Especially being so far out. Its just massive.

With it being a day at sea, I took the opportunity to experience a massage on the ship. I knew with all the sight seeing and traveling I had already done, I needed a good reflexology massage to get my ankle ready for the race the next day! It was pretty awesome with the rocking on the water!

JUNEAU-HALF MARATHON DAY!
We were bussed to the starting location about 20 minutes away, which was just good enough to get a taste of the small town and suburbs of Juneau. Unfortunately that meant we drove the course, which i always hate doing. It was an out and back course with a hill, which unfortunately was advised only after registration. I wasnt too excited about the course, but it ended up being better once we were running. Probably because there were 4 runners that I knew that would hold me accountable on getting this half marathon distance complete! The course ran along the waterway the majority of the time, besides that hill we had to tackle and then turn around! We saw bald eagles, otter, unfortunately no moose or bear, but there was a small waterfall, and across the water was an amazing view of another glacier! I wore kt tape and an ankle brace and surprisingly my ankle did amazing! I was more tired than anything from not running the distance in so long! Oh and that hill! I was super excited to finish, unfortunately there really wasnt anything at the finish line, except get back on the bus and go back. A little disapointing but I was excited to go explore the city anyways and eat some Alaskan King Crab to celebrate!! We checked out a saloon, went to a crab shack, took the gondola up top for some sight seeing and then called it a day! We celebrated back on board with a sunset from our friends balcony! It was a beautiful day and I finally was back to running!

SKAGWAY
This was a 'fun run/scavenger hunt' day with the Running Cruise, but I decided I would rather leave this small port and see more country side and try to track down some wildlife! So i rented a car and made the same trek as the gold miners and headed to Yukon! Thankfully I had some company and made a nice day of it! Beautiful weather, we made several pit stops and saw some beautiful scenery, but unfortunately still no wildlife. Back in town, we went to another Saloon, but this time took the tour. Apparently all of these ports were know for their Red Light Districts back in the mining days! Very interesting for a cheap tour!

ICY STRAIT
Icy Strait is a unique port as it is privately owned, unlike all the others are owned by the cruise lines. (yes you will see the same touristy things over and over, thus its important to do some tours outside the cruise line!) We decided to do the World's longest zip rider first thing in the morning! It took a while for a very quick ride, but Id say was worth it. The bus ride took you through the village so that was interesting. You are able to hold your phone if you dare, so I took a video the entire ride. It was beautiful from that high and could see the cruise ship in the distance. They gave us a free shot at the bottom. While we waited for our whale excursion, I explored the shoreline as it seemed the kids were having entirely too much fun! Come to find out there were ginormous starfish of every color you can think of! We got to see a good amount of whales on the tour and all different kinds. Those captains really try hard and work together with other boats to let everyone know where the whales are headed! We even got to hear a few of them.

KETCHIKAN
Another race day in Tongass Forest was very unique! It was a drizzly day, which had my anxiety a little high having to run on a slick road, but we took it nice and slow. So much greenery, tons of slugs (they even had a slug contest!), and came back to a bonfire and cold local beer! Oh, and we finally earned our medal! Still no bears or moose. Although come to find out, after we left, a bear and cub walked by our finish line! I did a quick walk and shop around town, found a stream of salmon, and then we caught a seaplane to Misty Fjords. This was pretty amazing as well....taking of and landing on the water (which I did in Vancouver before, but this was different). Once we left the city, it was nothing but green lush mountains, water, fog, and blue skies. It was very cool. We even got to land in the middle of the park and take in the fresh air! Still no bears or moose. We headed back and went real close to a hill side, up and over, and then BAM a herd of white sheep or goat running. Was pretty cool to see the contrast. Still looking for bear, I did end up spotting a small brown hump running across the field under a tree.....yep, THAT was my bear sighting of Alaska. lol. I guess you take what you can get!

VANCOUVER
We disembarked early and our flight was late, so we all did one more excursion. I think we were all super exhausted and it probably would have been wise to spend the night and then fly home in the morning, but we had already extended on the front end of the trip. A 7night cruise can easily turn into 10-12 days! Because i have already been to Vancouver, I opted for the countryside excursion which took me on a zodiac boat tour, a mining tour, and a suspension bridge tour on the outskirts by bus. All was beautiful, but I felt like I had already seen it all in Alaska. I really could have done without it as i was exhausted.Honestly, I dont even know if I remember the flight home! LOL.

An Alaskan Cruise is a unique experience but I honestly feel like I need another trip to Alaska to experience the wildlife and cold! I quickly learned that all the ports are very similar, they are warmer (wheres the snow?!), busy, touristy, and not always what Alaska is really about. I would love to get back and visit Denali...now they HAVE to have some bears!

The Running Cruise portion made it very simple in not having to plan much (except for your private excursions. They did off excursion for just the group, but I did opt to do my own) I wish they provided a photographer for half marathon day. There were no pictures. And I wish they had a little more set up of food/refreshments on half marathon day (they even ran out of water). Every day we had private group breakfast which was nice. The company does other destinations in the Caribbean and over seas. I would suggest it especially if you are a solo traveler but want to travel with similar people!

All in All, this was all about me getting back to half marathon distance and I did it! Having one of the best trips of my life only made it that much better!
